India makes imei number mandatory for mobiles
It is now mandatory to have imei number for all mobile phones in india. This has been made compulsory by trai, the indian govt agency which controls and monitors the mobile telephony in india.
This has been done so as to identify every mobile phone in india, keeping in mind the the fact that the mobile phones that so not have imei number are a security threat.
Under the new guidelines, all mobile phones must have valid imei numbers and the mobiles that do not have these will be disconnected from the 30th of nov, 2009.

IMEI Number is a unique number which is issued to every new mobile phone. It is a fifteen digit number, and this imei number is unique to every mobile.
